Signs of
spiders
in the house.

Increased webs in corners and a noticeable jump in house-spider sightings during 'spider season' (September–October) is the everyday opener.

Confidence rule — UK house spiders are not a treatment target. Treatment is only justified for confirmed false widow infestations near sleeping areas.

◉ Four senses — what to check

See it. Hear it.
Smell it. Find it.

01See

Webs and seasonal sightings

Tangled webs in undisturbed corners, particularly in garages, sheds and behind furniture. Large house spiders seen running across floors in autumn are males searching for mates.

02Hear

Silent

Spiders make no audible noise.

03Smell

No spider odour

Any smell from a web is dust caught in it, not the spider.

04Damage

Cosmetic only

Spiders do not damage the structure or contents — they are a sign of other insect activity providing prey.

◉ Where they shelter

Quiet corners and roof voids.

Undisturbed corners, garage rafters, the back of cupboards and inside roof voids.

◉ When activity peaks

Spiders are
evening, with autumn male wandering peak.

Time of activity is one of the fastest ways to confirm a species — daytime loft noise rules out rats, midnight kitchen scuttling rules out squirrels.

◉ Urgency trigger

When to call today, not next week.

A confirmed false widow inside a bedroom, or anyone in the home with a bite reaction — call for identification first.

◉ Still not sure — rule these out

Often mistaken for spiders.

◉ UK FAQ — spiders

Questions UK households
ask about spiders.

What are the first signs of spiders in a UK home?
Increased webs in corners and a noticeable jump in house-spider sightings during 'spider season' (September–October) is the everyday opener.
When are spiders most active?
Spiders are typically evening, with autumn male wandering peak.
When should I call a pest controller about spiders?
A confirmed false widow inside a bedroom, or anyone in the home with a bite reaction — call for identification first.
What is spiders activity commonly mistaken for?
Spiders are most often confused with false-widow, harvestmen. Use two pieces of sensory evidence — droppings plus sound, or smell plus damage — before you commit to a treatment plan.
Is it legal to treat spiders yourself in the UK?
Spiders are not a protected species in the UK and can be controlled without a licence, but you must use approved methods. The Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 also obliges occupiers to keep premises free of rats and mice — councils can serve notice if they don't.
Is my landlord or me responsible for spiders removal in a UK rental?
If you rent, the landlord is normally responsible for spiders when the cause is structural (gaps in brickwork, broken air-bricks, drain defects, shared loft) or when the infestation pre-dates your tenancy. Tenants are usually liable when the cause is hygiene, food storage or items they brought in. Report it in writing first — that creates the paper trail councils and deposit schemes look for.
Will my UK council deal with spiders for free?
Most UK councils still offer spiders treatment, but coverage varies sharply. Around a third now charge £70–£180 per visit, some only treat rats and mice for free, and waiting lists in cities can run 1–3 weeks. A private BPCA-member controller is typically same-day or next-day and gives you a written guarantee, which councils rarely do.
