The word 'emergency' is overused in pest control marketing, but a genuine emergency response carries a real cost — £40 to £120 on top of the standard treatment fee. Knowing which scenarios actually need same-day vs next-morning response saves money without taking risks.
Five genuine pest emergencies
- 01Wasp nest within 5m of a doorway, child's bedroom, or anyone with a sting allergy.
- 02Rats inside a food-prep area in a regulated setting (HMO, restaurant, school).
- 03Bed bug bites in a baby or young child's bed.
- 04Hornets — Asian or European — anywhere on the property.
- 05Squirrels actively chewing live electrical wiring in a loft (rare but documented fire risk).
Four scenarios that aren't emergencies
- A single mouse sighting in the kitchen — set a trap, book a next-day visit.
- A wasp inside the house when no nest is visible — almost always a lone explorer.
- Spider webs in the garden in autumn — seasonal, not infestation.
- Ant trail on the patio — exterior, slow-developing, daytime call-out is fine.
What 'same-day' actually means
Most vetted UK operators will quote 'same-day' as within 4 hours during 8am–6pm, and 'out-of-hours' as anything after 6pm or before 8am. Saturday is usually treated as a weekday with a small surcharge; Sunday and bank holidays carry the full out-of-hours premium.
